This has been a big year for me. Not everything was good and not everything was easy, but I appreciate all the lessons learned. And I have a lot to be thankful for going into the new year.
If you’re reading this blog you probably know I tested positive for BRCA gene mutation and decided to have preventative surgery. I got genetic testing in February and my life turned upside down in July when I got the results. From then on, my life has been a roller coaster.
I’m writing this on the last day of December and most of the BRCA journey is behind me. I haven’t posted anything for a while and of course, there’s a reason. Unless you follow me on Instagram you probably don’t know that I already had my surgery.
Almost four weeks ago I said goodbye to my breasts and fallopian tubes and started my journey towards a healthier and risk-free (or at least minimum risk) life. I’m still recovering and it has most definitely not been easy, but I’m glad it’s behind me and I can truly turn over a new leaf in 2020.
But even though my mastectomy is behind me, this blog is far from done. This is only the beginning. I promise to write more about the surgery and recovery when I’m feeling a bit better. I’ve always admired women who went through surgery and were able to post on Instagram, write a blog and share their stories just days after. I’m unfortunately not one of them.
Most days feeding my cats and taking a shower requires me to take a nap. But I am getting stronger and soon I’ll be able to write all the stories floating around in my head.
Until then I just want to say … Dear 2019, thank you for all that you brought me – the good, the bad, and the painful.
I’m incredibly lucky to have amazing parents who took care of me even though I’m an adult who should be taking care of them. And all my friends … There are no words. You guys made this last month go by easier, happier, and a lot more comfortable. Thank you for all the messages, visits, and sweets you brought me.
I will not name names, but only because the list would go on and on. You know who you are. And I am extremely lucky to have people like you in my life. Even those who enjoy sticking me with a needle a little too much 😉
And last but not least, thank you to everyone reading this blog. Your support has been incredible. I never thought I would get so many lovely messages and inspiring stories from total strangers.
I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year!
